COSHH Regulations

WHAT IS COSHH?

COSHH is the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health.

‘COSHH’ stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 and its purpose is that it essentially places legal duties on businesses the use hazardous substances. It requires employers to implement control measures and relevant training to those who use hazardous substances, such as employees, so that these hazardous substances are handled safely within the workplace.

WHY IS COSHH IMPORTANT?

COSHH is important because it provides the users of hazardous substances with the necessary knowledge to effectively manage exposure, especially in the times of the COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure they feel confident and safe working with these hazardous substances. Furthermore, these regulations are designed to make employers consider the health effects a substance might have, both in the short-term and long-term.

It is the responsibility of the employer to protect their employees from the risks of exposure, as outlined in the COSSH Regulations.
